Armed with insight, Alex begins to subtly counter Seraphina's antics, turning her own bizarre games against her with veiled wit.
The ink on the pages had stained my fingertips, a phantom mark of Seraphina’s hidden self. It was a clandestine baptism, of sorts, imbuing me with a knowledge that felt both potent and perilous. The diary, tucked back into its dusty niche behind the loose brick, was no longer just a collection of scribbled confessions; it was a blueprint, a cheat sheet to the labyrinthine mind of my stepmother. And now, I was armed.
The next morning, the air in the house hummed with an anticipatory tension, a familiar prelude to Seraphina’s elaborate performances. I could feel her assessing me, her gaze, even when unseen, a palpable weight. I, in turn, felt a strange calm, a detachment born of knowing the strings that would soon be pulled, the script she was about to enact.
It began, as it often did, with breakfast. Seraphina swept into the dining room, a vision in a silk robe the color of bruised plums, her silver hair meticulously coiffed. She surveyed the table, her lips pursed as if encountering an alien landscape. “Alex,” she began, her voice dripping with exaggerated concern, “your porridge appears to be… sentient. It’s positively writhing.”
