Chapter 4
The Whispering Walls
Alex starts noticing the oddities in Seraphina's behavior, sensing a performance beneath the madness, a hint of something more complex.
The house itself seemed to hold its breath. Not a dramatic, theatrical gasp like Seraphina might conjure, but a deep, drawn-out inhale, as if waiting for the next act to begin. I’d always felt it, a subtle hum beneath the surface of our days, a tremor in the foundations that had nothing to do with structural integrity and everything to do with the woman who resided within its walls. But lately, that hum had begun to sing. Louder. More insistent. It was as if the air itself had started to whisper secrets, not in words, but in the way shadows clung to corners, in the unnerving stillness that descended after a particularly flamboyant outburst.
Seraphina, of course, was oblivious. Or perhaps, I was beginning to suspect, she was the conductor of this entire symphony of unease, meticulously orchestrating each discordant note. Her pronouncements, once merely baffling, now felt… rehearsed. Her theatrical sighs, the way she’d dramatically clutch her pearls (which, I’d long suspected, were not real pearls at all, but a cheap imitation, much like her supposed affection) when confronted with even the mildest inconvenience, were starting to feel less like genuine distress and more like a performance for an invisible audience.
I found myself watching her, not with the usual dread, but with a growing, almost detached curiosity. It was like observing a particularly elaborate puppet show, trying to discern the strings that pulled her, the hidden mechanism that drove her bizarre displays. There was a method to her madness, I was starting to realize, a pattern woven into the fabric of her eccentricities. She was rarely just *angry*; she was *outraged*, her voice rising to operatic heights. She wasn’t merely *disappointed*; she was *devastated*, her face crumpling as if she’d just lost her entire fortune. And always, always, there was the underlying need for attention, for validation, for a constant stream of reassurance that she was the most magnificent creature to ever grace this mundane existence.
