The silence was the first thing that struck me, a palpable absence after years of constant, jarring noise. It wasn’t the hushed quiet of a library, nor the peaceful stillness of a sleeping world. This was a vacant quiet, a space where the shrill pronouncements and theatrical sighs of Seraphina used to echo, leaving behind only a faint, unsettling hum. I’d expected freedom to feel like a triumphant crescendo, a fanfare announcing my liberation. Instead, it was a gentle exhale, a soft landing after a long, chaotic fall.

My new room was small, clean, and blessedly devoid of any overtly menacing décor. No strategically placed gargoyles leering from the lampshades, no unsettlingly cheerful porcelain dolls with eyes that followed you. Days bled into weeks, each one a placid, unblemished surface. I was enrolled in a new school, a place where the most exciting event of the week was the bake sale, and the biggest drama involved a misplaced textbook. My classmates were… pleasant. They discussed pop music and video games with an earnestness that I found both baffling and strangely comforting. No one seemed to harbor any secret ambitions of turning my lunch into a performance art piece or declaring my homework an act of rebellion requiring immediate, dramatic intervention.
