The air in the grand ballroom, usually thick with the cloying scent of Seraphina’s expensive perfume and the stale desperation of societal climbers, was now a tempest of its own making. Shouts, a cacophony of outrage and disbelief, echoed off the gilded ceilings. My heart, a frantic hummingbird trapped in my ribs, beat a rhythm of pure, unadulterated terror. This was it. The grand unveiling, as Seraphina had so dramatically termed it, had devolved into utter pandemonium, and I was caught in its eye.

From my vantage point, a shadowed alcove near a towering floral arrangement that smelled suspiciously of mothballs, I watched the scene unfold. Seraphina, usually a peacock preening for an adoring crowd, was now a flustered hen, her elaborate sapphire gown a stark contrast to the wild, disheveled state of her coiffure. Her pronouncements, once delivered with the chilling certainty of a prophet, were now a series of panicked squawks. The “rare artifact” she’d presented as the centerpiece of her evening, a gaudy, tarnished locket that looked more like something pilfered from a dusty antique shop than a priceless heirloom, had indeed been the catalyst. Not for admiration, as she’d intended, but for a chorus of indignant accusations.

Mr. Dubois, the portly art dealer with a monocle perpetually perched on his nose, was spluttering, his face a shade of puce that rivaled the velvet drapes. “This… this trinket,” he’d stammered, his voice cracking, “is a common mass-produced piece! I recognized it from a catalogue of… of novelty items!”
