The air in the grand ballroom crackled with anticipation, a tangible hum of hushed whispers and the clinking of champagne flutes. Seraphina, a peacock in her own right, preened at the center of the room, her laughter a tinkling bell that echoed through the opulent space. Tonight was the annual Charity Gala, a night where the town’s elite gathered, and Seraphina, naturally, was the star. Her meticulously crafted persona, the benevolent patron of the arts, shone brighter than the chandeliers above. She had spent weeks planning this event, every detail a testament to her supposed grace and generosity. It was, in her eyes, the pinnacle of her reign, a stage upon which her carefully curated perfection would be lauded.

I, on the other hand, felt like a moth drawn to a very dangerous flame. Clad in a borrowed, slightly-too-big tuxedo that itched in all the wrong places, I navigated the periphery of the room, a ghost in my own home. My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs, a drumbeat of dread and a perverse thrill. For weeks, the diary had been my constant companion, its brittle pages a roadmap to Seraphina’s elaborate deceptions. Each entry was a piece of the puzzle, a chillingly precise blueprint of her machinations, and tonight, I held the key to its unraveling.

Seraphina’s gaze swept across the room, her smile a predatory curve. She caught sight of me, a flicker of something unreadable in her eyes before it was replaced by her practiced, dazzling beam. She beckoned me over with a flourish of her bejeweled hand. “Alex, darling! Come, greet our esteemed guests. You must be the picture of familial devotion tonight.”
