It was also, according to the scrawled entries in her diary, her chosen arena for the “Grand Unveiling of My Artistic Genius.” My genius, on the other hand, was to be a subtler, far more terrifying spectacle.

My fingers, slick with a nervous sweat that felt alien against the cool, smooth leather of the diary tucked deep within my blazer, traced the embossed initials, ‘S.V.’ Seraphina’s. Each page of this forbidden tome was a whispered confession, a blueprint for her madness, and tonight, it was my shield, my sword, and my terrifying guide. I’d spent weeks memorizing its labyrinthine logic, deciphering the coded language of her insecurities, and cataloging her bizarre pronouncements as if they were gospel.

Seraphina herself was a whirlwind of crimson silk and ostentatious pearls, her laughter, a practiced, tinkling bell, echoing through the room as she greeted the arriving guests. Her smile was a painted mask, stretched taut over a face that I now knew was a battlefield of anxieties. I watched her, a knot of dread and a strange, defiant exhilaration tightening in my chest. This was it. The culmination of weeks of planning, of stolen moments with her secrets, of a fear so profound it had curdled into a cold, hard resolve.
