Alex uses diary knowledge to subtly expose Seraphina's vulnerabilities during preparations, causing minor, yet noticeable, cracks in her composure.

The air in the house had always been thick with anticipation, a humid, cloying atmosphere that pressed down on my chest like a damp blanket. But in the days leading up to the Grand Summer Soirée, it grew almost suffocating. Seraphina, my stepmother, was a whirlwind of frantic energy, a magnificent, terrifying creature preparing for her annual performance. This year, however, her performance felt different. The diary, that forbidden tome tucked away like a guilty secret, had changed everything. Its pages, filled with a dizzying blend of delusion and desperate yearning, had etched themselves into my mind, transforming me from a passive observer into a reluctant strategist.

My role in the preparations, as always, was that of a silent, obedient shadow. I was to arrange the floral displays, polish the silver until it gleamed with an almost accusatory brightness, and ensure the champagne flutes were arranged in their precarious pyramid, a monument to Seraphina’s perceived elegance. Usually, these tasks were a mindless drone, a way to pass the hours until the inevitable onslaught of guests and Seraphina’s carefully curated performance. But now, each movement was imbued with a new significance. I was no longer just a servant; I was an archaeologist, sifting through the ruins of her carefully constructed reality.

“Alex, darling,” Seraphina’s voice, a silken whip, cut through the silence of the drawing-room. She was inspecting the towering arrangements of lilies and roses, her brow furrowed in an expression of profound artistic contemplation. “Are these… are these *truly* the best you could do? They lack a certain… *je ne sais quoi*.”
