The Masquerade Ball
Seraphina announces a grand, upcoming event. Alex suspects this is the stage for her most elaborate, and potentially disastrous, scheme yet.
The air in the house had always been thick with anticipation, a low hum of unease that vibrated just beneath the surface of everyday life. But this morning, it was different. It was a palpable tension, a coiled spring ready to snap. Seraphina, perched on the edge of the velvet chaise lounge like a predatory bird surveying its domain, announced it with a flourish that would have made a monarch blush.
“My darlings,” she began, her voice dripping with an unctuous sweetness that always set my teeth on edge, “prepare yourselves for an evening of unparalleled splendor! I have decided that this dreary, ordinary existence requires a… *correction*.”
I, naturally, was the only darling present. My existence, far from dreary, was a tightrope walk over a pit of her peculiar brand of madness. I braced myself, my gaze fixed on the ornate birdcage that housed a particularly disgruntled-looking parakeet, a silent witness to our domestic dramas.
