The fluorescent lights of Northwood High hummed a familiar, slightly irritating tune, a soundtrack to Laura’s perpetual state of mild panic. Today, that panic had a distinct Marcus Morrison-shaped center. She clutched her calculus textbook like a shield, her eyes darting around the crowded hallway, half-hoping, half-dreading a glimpse of him. Every flash of dark hair, every confident stride, sent a jolt through her, a ridiculous mix of mortification and an almost unbearable flutter.

It had been three days since the email. Three days of replaying the mortifying missive in her head, of imagining Marcus’s face when he read about her very specific, very graphic dream involving his perfectly sculpted… well, everything. Their subsequent digital exchanges had been a tightrope walk over a chasm of awkwardness. He’d send her a question about a history assignment, and she’d reply, her fingers trembling, adding a subtly suggestive emoji or a question about his favorite band. He’d respond with a playfully ambiguous remark, and her inbox would feel like a secret, steamy sanctuary in the middle of the mundane school day.
