Laura’s inbox was usually a wasteland. A barren digital desert populated by spam emails about miracle cures for baldness and notifications that her library books were overdue by approximately three geological eras. Today, however, it was an oasis. A shimmering, mirage-like sanctuary in the sweltering heat of high school social warfare. And Marcus Morrison, the very embodiment of the mirage, was her guide.

The email chain, which had begun with a mortification so profound it threatened to fuse her very soul into a molten lump of embarrassment, had somehow transformed. Marcus’s initial reply, a single, perfectly crafted “LOL. Wow. You have some *interesting* dreams, Jacobs,” had been followed by Laura’s hesitant, “I am SO sorry. I swear, I have no idea how that happened. My cat walked on the keyboard. Probably. Definitely the cat.”

Then, the magic had unfurled. Marcus, bless his golden-boy heart, hadn’t recoiled in horror. He hadn’t forwarded it to the entire football team with a series of mocking emojis. Instead, he’d replied with a single question: “So, was the dragon involved in the dream, or just a supporting role?”
