The fluorescent lights of Northwood High hummed their usual, slightly depressing tune, a soundtrack to the daily grind of teenage existence. But today, that hum was amplified, a thousand-watt buzz of something far more electrifying than faulty wiring. It was the hum of gossip, a creature of pure, unadulterated energy, and it had found its latest prey: Laura Jacobs and Marcus Morrison.
Laura felt it the moment she walked through the double doors, a palpable shift in the air. Heads turned, not just the usual fleeting glances she was accustomed to, but lingering stares, accompanied by hushed whispers that seemed to follow her like a particularly persistent shadow. Her cheeks, already prone to a blush at the mere thought of Marcus’s name, flared a full-blown crimson. She clutched her worn copy of “Wuthering Heights” tighter, as if the Brontë sisters could somehow shield her from the sudden, intense scrutiny.
“Okay, this is officially weird,” Billie whispered, her voice a frantic flutter beside Laura. Billie, bless her effervescent heart, had a knack for stating the obvious, usually at the most inopportune moments. Today, however, her observation was spot on.
