The air in the auditorium still hummed with the aftermath of Kate’s spectacular implosion. It wasn't a quiet fizzle, oh no, Kate never did anything by halves. Her carefully constructed facade, the one that had held sway over Northwood High for what felt like eons, had cracked, splintered, and then, with a dramatic flourish that would have made Shakespeare himself proud, shattered into a million glittering pieces right there on the stage. And who had been holding the hammer? Laura, armed with nothing but the undeniable, undeniable truth, and Marcus, standing stoically beside her, a silent, golden shield.

Billie, bless her chaotic heart, was practically vibrating with glee. She’d managed to sneak backstage during the ensuing pandemonium, her face a mask of feigned concern that couldn’t quite hide the mischievous sparkle in her eyes. She found Laura leaning against a dusty prop wardrobe, her face pale but her eyes shining with a mixture of relief and disbelief.

“You did it, girl!” Billie whispered, throwing her arms around Laura in a bone-crushing hug. “You actually did it! She’s done. Finished. Kaput!”
