At the school dance, Kate makes her final move. Laura and Marcus must decide whether to hide or confront their feelings and Kate.
The gymnasium, usually a sterile space echoing with the thud of basketballs, had been transformed. Fairy lights, draped precariously from the bleachers, cast a hazy glow over a sea of awkwardly shuffling teenagers. The air thrummed with a saccharine pop playlist, a stark contrast to the nervous energy vibrating through Laura Jacobs. She clutched her tiny, sequined clutch like a shield, her gaze darting towards the punch bowl, a safe harbor in this tempest of social interaction. Her sequined dress, a bold, glittering deviation from her usual muted wardrobe, felt like a costume, an imposter inhabiting her skin.
Beside her, Billie, a whirlwind of fuchsia taffeta, bounced on the balls of her feet. “Okay, deep breaths, Lau! You look amazing. Like a disco ball that accidentally wandered into a high school dance. In the best way possible!” Billie punctuated her statement with a vigorous nod that sent a stray curl spiraling towards her eye.
Laura offered a weak smile, her stomach doing a frantic samba. “Thanks, Bill. I just… I feel like everyone’s staring.”
