The fluorescent lights of Northwood High hummed a discordant symphony, a soundtrack to the escalating tension that had been simmering for weeks. It was Friday, the eve of the annual Spring Fling, a night that promised glitter, questionable DJ choices, and the potential for utter social annihilation. Laura clutched her worn copy of *Wuthering Heights* a little tighter, the stormy moors a welcome escape from the tempest brewing within the school walls. She’d seen Kate earlier, a predatory glint in her eyes as she cornered a bewildered freshman, whispering secrets that would undoubtedly be weaponized by lunchtime. Laura knew, with a chilling certainty, that she was next.
Billie, bless her chaotic heart, was a whirlwind of misplaced enthusiasm. She’d cornered Laura by the lockers, a flurry of sequins and nervous energy. “Okay, so, the Fling! We need to strategize. What are you wearing? Because if Kate shows up in that ridiculous sequined jumpsuit again, we need a counter-offensive. Maybe something… understatedly fierce?” Billie gestured wildly with a fistful of bracelets, nearly taking out a passing sophomore.
