The Deceiver's Gambit
Leo realizes some allies are not what they seem. A seemingly helpful guide might be a pawn of the darkness, sowing discord. He must learn to read intentions and discern genuine friendship from cunning deceit.
The air in the Whispering Woods, usually alive with the rustle of leaves and the chirping of unseen birds, felt heavy, stagnant. Leo, his skin still tinged with the iridescent scales of the river sprites from their last excursion, felt an unease prickle at the back of his neck. It wasn't the familiar thrill of danger, the exhilarating rush that came with facing down a kraken or outsmarting a band of marauding goblins. This was a cold dread, a sickening certainty that something was fundamentally wrong.
Maya, her usually bright eyes clouded with worry, stayed close to his side, her hand resting lightly on the hilt of the enchanted dagger Leo had crafted for her. Sam, ever the pragmatist, kept scanning the dense canopy, his brow furrowed. He’d been unusually quiet since they’d entered the woods, his usual boisterous commentary replaced by a tense silence.
“It’s… quiet,” Maya murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. “Too quiet.”
