The air in the Pirate’s Cove had always carried the briny tang of the sea, a potent mix of salt, tar, and the faint, metallic scent of adventure. For Leo, Maya, and Sam, it was a familiar perfume, one that had seasoned countless afternoons of swashbuckling and treasure hunts. But lately, a new scent had begun to mingle with the old, a subtle, cloying sweetness that felt wrong, like a flower blooming in a graveyard. It was a scent that clung not to the salt-sprayed timbers of their imaginary ships, but to the very edges of their perception, a whisper of something unhealthy.

“Hold fast, ye scurvy dogs!” Leo bellowed, his voice echoing across the rocky outcrop that served as their makeshift crow’s nest. He pointed a weathered spyglass, fashioned from a sturdy driftwood branch, towards the shimmering horizon. “I spy… a galleon!”

Maya, perched beside him, her braided hair whipping in the phantom breeze, squinted. “Are you sure, Leo? It looks more like a cloud shaped like a ship.”
