Chapter 8
Selly's Demands Grow
Selly's whispers become commands. She wants Emily to be quiet, to stay away from Sally. Emily's behavior shifts from imaginative play to fearful obedience.
Selly’s whispers, once like the rustle of dry leaves, had begun to deepen, to take on a sharp, insistent edge. They weren’t suggestions anymore, not invitations to play. They were commands. “Selly says I have to be quiet now, Mommy,” Emily would say, her eyes wide and unblinking, fixed on some point just beyond Sally’s shoulder. “She doesn’t like loud noises.”
Sally would try to coax her daughter out of these moods, to tickle her or make a silly face, but Emily would flinch away, her small body rigid. “No, Mommy. Selly said not to touch. Selly said to be still.”
