Chapter 6
When Wishes Go Wrong
Emily wishes for a toy, and it appears, but it's slightly broken. Sally realizes Selly's gifts aren't kind; they come with a hidden, unsettling price or consequence.
The little music box sat on Emily’s dresser, a delicate thing with painted ballerinas. Emily had wished for it. She’d whispered the wish into the dim corner of her room, the one where Selly always seemed to linger. Sally had heard the wish, of course, a soft murmur that had pricked at her, but she’d dismissed it. Emily’s imagination was a vibrant thing, a kaleidoscope of stories and friendships that bloomed in the quiet hours. And so, when the music box appeared, nestled amongst Emily’s collection of stuffed animals, Sally simply smiled and praised her daughter’s vivid storytelling.
But as Emily wound the tiny key, a faint, discordant note chimed. The music was tinny, off-key, and one of the painted ballerinas, usually poised in mid-pirouette, hung at an awkward, broken angle. Emily’s brow furrowed, her lower lip trembling. “Selly,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “It’s… broken.”
Sally knelt beside her daughter, her heart giving a little lurch. The music box was new. It hadn’t been in the house before. She’d looked through Emily’s toys just that morning. “Oh, honey,” she said, her voice softer than usual. She picked up the box, turning it over in her hands. The paint was chipped in a few places, and the mechanism felt stiff, reluctant. It wasn’t a new toy at all, not really. It looked… old. And a little sad. “Maybe it just needs a little fixing,” Sally said, trying to sound cheerful. But a cold wave washed over her. Selly’s gifts. They weren’t just appearing out of thin air. They were given. And this gift, this broken music box, felt less like a present and more like a… compromise.
