The silence that followed Selly’s final, echoing shriek was profound. It wasn't just the absence of noise; it was a physical void, as if the very air had exhaled and held its breath. Sally clutched Emily tighter, her own heart thrumming a frantic, uneven rhythm against her ribs. She braced herself, waiting for the return of the chilling presence, the oppressive weight that had settled over their home like a shroud. But it didn't come. Instead, a subtle shift occurred, like the slow dawn after a long, terrifying night. The unnatural chill that had seeped into the very bones of their house began to recede. A faint, warm glow, hesitant at first, then steadily strengthening, seeped from the corners of the room, chasing away the lingering shadows. It was the soft, familiar light of their living room, no longer distorted by Selly’s malevolence, but pure and comforting.

Emily, who had buried her face in Sally’s shoulder, slowly lifted her head. Her eyes, wide and still shadowed with fear, blinked in the returning light. “Mommy?” she whispered, her voice raspy.

Sally stroked Emily’s hair, her own hands trembling. “It’s okay, sweetie. She’s gone.” She looked around the room, half expecting to see a dark shape lurking, a pair of eyes watching from the gloom. But there was nothing. The oppressive atmosphere that had suffocated them for days, weeks, was lifting. It was as if a heavy blanket had been pulled away, leaving them free to breathe again. The air felt lighter, cleaner, filled with the scent of their own home, the faint aroma of Sally’s forgotten tea, the comforting scent of Emily’s lavender soap.
