The air in the living room crackled, thick with a tension so potent it felt like static electricity against Sally’s skin. Emily, usually a whirlwind of giggles and bright-eyed wonder, was unnervingly still, her small hands clenched into fists at her sides. Her gaze, usually fixed on her mother’s face, was locked onto the darkest corner of the room, where the shadows seemed to writhe and deepen, even with the midday sun attempting to push its way through the drawn curtains.

Emily flinched, tucking her chin into her chest, her small body trembling. Sally’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the encroaching dread. She felt a primal urge to scoop Emily into her arms, to run, to flee, but her feet felt rooted to the spot, her gaze drawn to the source of the disturbance.
