Chapter 17
Confronting the Shadow
Sally, armed with light, confronts Selly. Emily stays close, her hand gripping her mother's, drawing strength from their bond. Selly recoils from the bright light.
Sally clutched the flashlight, its beam a defiant spear against the encroaching gloom. The room, once Emily’s cheerful sanctuary, now felt like a cage, its corners thick with an unnatural shadow. Emily, a small, trembling shadow herself, clung to Sally’s leg, her fingers digging into the fabric of her mother’s jeans. A low, guttural chuckle seemed to emanate from the shadows. It wasn't a sound of mirth, but of something ancient and cold. “But I have so much for you,” a voice slithered, not from any one place, but from the very air around them. It was Selly’s voice, yet deeper, rougher, like stones grinding together. “Wishes, little ones. So many wishes.”
