The air in the house had grown thick, heavy with an unspoken dread that clung to the walls like cobwebs. Sally watched Emily, her usually bright eyes clouded with a fear that was far too old for her five years. It had started subtly, a flicker of unease, a whisper in the quiet hours. But now, it was a storm brewing, and Emily was caught in its eye.

Emily’s small hand, usually seeking Sally’s for comfort or to point out a ladybug, now trembled as she reached for her mother. Tears, fat and glistening, traced paths through the smudges of dirt on her cheeks. Her voice, a fragile thread, broke the oppressive silence. Emily’s fear was a raw, palpable thing, a siren call to Sally’s deepest protective instincts. She pulled her daughter into a tight embrace, holding her close as if to shield her from a world that had suddenly turned monstrous. Emily’s small body shook against hers, a testament to the terror that had finally broken through her child-like innocence.
