The house had always been a place of warmth and laughter for Salsa and Emma. It was a haven, a sanctuary built on shared secrets and bedtime stories. But lately, a chill had begun to creep into its corners, a silent guest that made the air thick with unspoken unease. It started subtly, like a forgotten whisper on the wind, or a shadow that lingered a moment too long in the periphery of vision.

One Tuesday morning, Emma’s favorite teddy bear, Bartholomew, who usually sat proudly on her pillow, was found nestled amongst the dusty forgotten toys in the attic. Emma, usually so delighted by Bartholomew’s adventures, looked bewildered. “But Melissa said he wanted to see the stars,” she mumbled, her small brow furrowed in confusion. Salsa, already on edge from a night of restless sleep, felt a prickle of alarm. She’d checked Emma’s room before bed, Bartholomew perched on her pillow. How could he have gotten to the attic?

Later that day, while Salsa was folding laundry, a stack of perfectly ironed shirts tumbled from the top of the dresser, scattering across the floor. There was no draft, no tremor, just a sudden, inexplicable cascade. Salsa stared at the fallen clothes, her heart thudding a nervous rhythm against her ribs. It felt… deliberate. As if an unseen hand had nudged them.
