Salsa watched Emma from the doorway, a knot of unease tightening in her stomach. Emma sat cross-legged on the rug, her back to Salsa, her small hands meticulously arranging a collection of smooth, grey stones. They weren't just any stones; they were the kind that shimmered with an inner light, a gift from Melissa just yesterday. At first, Salsa had dismissed them as pretty trinkets, the product of Emma’s boundless imagination and her new friend’s supposed generosity. But the stones felt unnervingly cold, even on a warm afternoon, and seemed to hum with a low, almost imperceptible vibration when Emma touched them.

"Melissa gave them to me," Emma had chirped, her eyes wide with delight, as she’d presented the glittering rocks. "She said they're for when I need to be brave."

Brave. The word echoed in Salsa’s mind now, a discordant note in the otherwise peaceful hum of their home. Emma had always been a spirited child, but lately, her spirit seemed to be waning, replaced by a quiet, almost fearful dependence. She still spoke of Melissa, of course, her voice often hushed, as if sharing a secret meant only for them. But the magic that had once surrounded Melissa’s visits, the pure joy that had radiated from Emma, had begun to curdle.
