Emma stood at the edge of her bedroom, the familiar plush carpet a stark contrast to the icy dread that had begun to coil in her stomach. Salsa watched from the hallway, her heart a frantic drum against her ribs. She’d seen the way Emma’s eyes, once bright with wonder at Melissa’s gifts, now held a flicker of apprehension. The dolls that had appeared from nowhere, the candy that tasted like starlight, had slowly morphed into things that unsettled. A music box that played a discordant, jarring melody. A collection of smooth, grey stones that hummed with a low, unsettling vibration. And last night, the doll that had blinked its painted eyes open, its smile wide and unnatural, had sent a shiver down Emma’s spine that had echoed through the entire house.

“Melissa?” Emma’s voice trembled, a small bird caught in a storm. She clutched her favorite teddy bear, Barnaby, his button eyes a familiar, comforting sight. “You’re… you’re not being nice anymore.”
