Salsa’s breath hitched, a sharp, ragged sound in the suffocating silence. Before her, a chasm had opened, not in the floorboards, but in the very air. It was a darkness deeper than any shadow, a void that pulsed with a malevolent energy that made her teeth ache. And within that void, a figure began to coalesce. Tall, impossibly so, and cloaked in a blackness that seemed to absorb all light, it was Melissa. But this was not the Melissa of Emma’s whispered stories, the one who brought sparkling trinkets and sweet treats. This was a nightmare made manifest, a creature of pure, chilling dread.

Emma, her small body trembling, was pressed against Salsa’s side, her face buried in the fabric of her mother’s dress. Salsa could feel the frantic thumping of her daughter’s heart against her own. She wanted to scoop Emma up, to run, to shield her from this monstrous revelation. But her feet felt rooted to the spot, her own fear a cold, paralyzing tide.

Melissa’s form solidified, a silhouette against nothing, yet undeniably present. A low hum, like the grinding of ancient stones, emanated from it, a sound that vibrated in Salsa’s bones. The air grew heavy, thick with an unseen pressure, and the faint scent of ozone, sharp and metallic, pricked at Salsa’s nostrils.
