Chapter 11
Unveiling Melissa's Nature
Through research or a terrifying encounter, Salsa realizes Melissa is not an imaginary friend but a malevolent entity feeding on fear and Emma's imagination.
Salsa paced the worn rug in the living room, the silence of the house pressing in on her like a physical weight. Emma was asleep, a small, peaceful lump under her favorite rainbow duvet, but sleep offered no solace to Salsa. The events of the past few days, the escalating strangeness, the growing fear in Emma’s eyes – it all coalesced into a knot of dread in her stomach. Melissa. The name itself now tasted like ash.
She’d tried everything. Talking to Emma, gently questioning her about Melissa’s peculiar gifts. She’d scoured the internet, searching for explanations for children’s imaginary friends, for unusual coping mechanisms, for anything that might make sense of the creeping unease that permeated their home. But nothing explained the way Emma’s toys sometimes moved on their own, or the chilling whispers that seemed to emanate from the corners of rooms when Melissa was supposedly near. Nothing explained the shadow that seemed to stretch unnaturally long, even when there was no light source to cast it.
Last night had been the worst. Emma had woken screaming, not from a nightmare of monsters under the bed, but from a vision of Melissa’s face, contorted into something monstrous, her usual tall, dark form now radiating an oppressive cold. Emma had described it with a child’s terrifying clarity: “Her eyes were like empty holes, Mama, and she was laughing, but it wasn’t a happy laugh. It was like the wind in a graveyard.”
