Chapter 10
Emma's Plea
Overwhelmed by fear, Emma confides in Salsa. She admits Melissa is scary and she wants her gone. This shared vulnerability strengthens their bond and resolve.
Emma’s small hands trembled as she clutched her mother’s favorite floral-patterned apron. The fabric felt rough and comforting all at once, a familiar anchor in the swirling sea of her fear. Salsa knelt, her eyes, usually bright with warmth, now clouded with a worry that mirrored Emma’s own. The shadows in the living room, once playful companions, seemed to stretch and writhe, mimicking the unsettling presence that had taken root in their home.
“Mommy,” Emma whispered, her voice barely a breath, “Melissa… she’s not nice anymore.” The words tumbled out, a confession laced with the raw terror that had been building for days. She squeezed her eyes shut, the image of Melissa’s impossibly tall, inky form, her featureless face contorted into something akin to a sneer, burned into her mind. The gifts, once so dazzling, now felt like cruel jokes, each one a twisted reminder of the terror that lurked beneath Melissa’s dark exterior. The shimmering, color-changing doll had begun to whisper secrets in the dead of night, secrets Emma couldn't quite understand but that chilled her to the bone. The self-tying shoelaces had started to knot themselves into impossibly tight tangles, tripping her when she least expected it. And the laughter, oh, the laughter. It had started as a tinkling, joyous sound, but now it echoed with a malice that made Emma’s stomach churn.
Salsa pulled Emma closer, her arms wrapping around her daughter like a protective shield. She had seen the change in Emma, the way her bright eyes had dulled, the way her once boundless imagination now seemed to be a source of torment. For weeks, she had dismissed Melissa as a figment of Emma’s creative mind, a phase any child might go through. But the unease had grown, a persistent hum beneath the surface of their lives, and now, seeing Emma’s genuine distress, Salsa knew it was more than just an imaginary friend.
