The air in the coffee shop was thick with the scent of burnt sugar and desperation. Harper stirred her lukewarm latte, the clatter of her spoon against the ceramic a nervous percussion against the low hum of conversation. Across from her, Remi, a miniature blonde whirlwind, was meticulously constructing a cookie-crumb fortress on her plate. Gunner, a blur of blue eyes and boundless energy, was attempting to scale the side of a plush armchair with the tenacity of a seasoned mountaineer.

“Mommy, can Sean have a cookie crumb?” Remi’s voice, sweet as honey, cut through Harper’s internal monologue.

Harper blinked, snapping back to reality. “Of course, sweetie. Just a tiny one for Sean.” She glanced at the dog bed tucked beside their booth, where Sean, a scruffy terrier mix, lay with one eye open, observing the chaos with a practiced, weary air.
