Harper traced the intricate lines of the tattoo snaking up Wilder’s arm, the rough texture a familiar comfort against her fingertips. The late afternoon sun, thick and golden, streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of their penthouse, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air and the quiet intensity that settled between them. It had been weeks since the explosive confrontation that had nearly shattered everything, weeks of navigating the fragile peace they’d managed to cobble together.
“You’re quiet,” Wilder murmured, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through her. He turned his head slightly, his blue eyes, usually sharp and assessing, softened with an emotion she was still learning to decipher. It was a tenderness that unnerved and thrilled her in equal measure.
“Just thinking,” Harper replied, her voice softer than she intended. “About how close we came to… well, you know.” The unspoken word, ‘over,’ hung heavy between them.
