The afternoon sun, usually a gentle balm on my skin, felt more like a spotlight today, highlighting the dust motes dancing in the air of the potting shed. It was a constant battle, this farm. Even indoors, the earth seemed determined to cling, to remind me of its insistent, earthy pull. My fingers, stained with soil from tending the wilting petunias, traced the faded lines of the map spread out on the workbench. It was a fragile thing, smelling faintly of old parchment and something else… something wild and untamed, like the scent of rain on dry earth. My novel, my escape, lay forgotten beside it, its pages filled with fantastical landscapes that felt a world away from the leaky roof and the endless chores.

A shadow fell across the map, and I jumped, my heart giving a startled leap against my ribs. I spun around, expecting to see Father, his brow furrowed about the fence that needed mending, or Mother, her voice laced with that familiar, weary sigh about the washing. Instead, a stranger stood there, silhouetted against the open doorway.

He was tall, with a shock of dark hair that fell across his forehead and eyes the color of a stormy sea. A smile played on his lips, a charming, easy thing that made him look both roguish and utterly disarming. He wore practical, well-worn clothes, the kind of adventurer’s attire I’d only ever read about.
