The air in the chamber was thick with the scent of ancient dust and something else, something sharp and metallic, like the tang of blood. Elara clutched the map tighter, her knuckles white. The symbols on its surface, once so alluring, now seemed to writhe with a sinister energy. Beside her, Silas’s usual easy smile was gone, replaced by a taut, predatory grimace. It had been too easy, hadn't it? Finding the Sunstone’s lair, the whispered riddles of Master Eldrin, the sudden, almost unbelievable proximity to their goal. A cold dread began to snake its way through Elara’s veins, coiling around her heart.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Silas’s voice, usually a smooth balm, now scraped against her nerves like rough stone. He gestured towards the pedestal where the Sunstone, a fist-sized gem that pulsed with an inner light, rested. It was more magnificent than any legend had described, radiating warmth that felt both inviting and dangerous.
Elara nodded, her gaze still fixed on the map, on the intricate patterns that seemed to shift and rearrange themselves before her eyes. "It's… powerful." She felt a strange kinship with the stone, a hum of recognition that echoed the faint pulse from the locket beneath her tunic.
