Chapter 15
A Rift in Trust
Elara begins to notice inconsistencies in Silas's stories. A growing unease replaces her initial trust, fueled by Lyra's protective instincts.
The scent of damp earth and crushed hay was Elara’s constant companion, a perfume far removed from the lavender and rosewater her sister, Mille, favored. It clung to her clothes, her hair, even the calluses on her hands that were slowly, stubbornly, taking the place of the soft skin she remembered. Today, the farm felt particularly stifling, the endless cycle of mucking out stalls and mending fences a stark contrast to the thrilling, dangerous world promised by the map. She’d spent the morning wrestling with a stubborn boar, its tusks glinting with a primal fury that echoed the unease now settling in her own heart.
Silas had been gone for two days, promising to return with supplies and further information. He’d left with a flourish, a charming smile that had, at first, disarmed her completely. He spoke of ancient texts and hidden routes, his words painting vivid pictures that made the dusty farmyard fade into insignificance. But a seed of doubt had been planted, and it was beginning to sprout, nourished by Lyra’s subtle, yet insistent, nudges.
Lyra, a creature of moonlight and mist, rarely offered explicit warnings. Her communication was a language of instinct, a ripple in the air, a sudden chill, a low, guttural hum that vibrated deep within Elara’s bones. Since Silas’s departure, Lyra had been restless, her ethereal form flickering at the edges of Elara’s vision, her luminous eyes fixed on the path Silas had taken. Today, as Elara stirred the slop for the pigs, Lyra’s presence was a tangible weight in the air, a low thrumming that spoke of unseen currents, of something amiss.
