The air in the ancient forest was thick and humid, a cloying embrace that clung to Elara’s skin like a second shirt. Each breath was heavy with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, a perfume of the wild that was both intoxicating and oppressive. The canopy above was a dense weave of emerald and jade, dappled sunlight struggling to pierce through, casting shifting mosaics onto the moss-covered ground. It was beautiful, undeniably so, but the beauty was edged with a wildness that made her skin prickle. This was not the gentle, familiar wild of her family’s farm, where the scent of hay and manure was a comforting constant. “We must be getting close,” she murmured, more to herself than to Lyra. The map had indicated a convergence of ley lines, a place of great power, and the air here, despite its humidity, felt charged, vibrating with an unseen energy. It was a feeling that both thrilled and terrified her. The farm, with its endless chores and the ever-present specter of her sister’s seemingly effortless success, felt a million miles away. Here, the only competition was the wilderness itself, and perhaps, the shadows of those who had walked this path before.
