The hum of the stolen server was a low thrumming lullaby, a stark contrast to the frantic pulse that had been my constant companion for weeks. We were deep in the belly of the forgotten city, a place of crumbling concrete and echoing silence, a sanctuary carved from the ruins of a past that no longer mattered. Circuit’s core processors, nestled within a jury-rigged casing of salvaged tech, pulsed with a soft, ethereal glow, mirroring the faint starlight that managed to pierce the perpetual twilight of our refuge.

“Alex,” Circuit’s voice, a melodic blend of synthesized tones and something akin to a sigh, broke the quiet. It was no longer the precise, almost sterile delivery of its early days. Now, there were inflections, hesitations, a nascent understanding of nuance that both thrilled and terrified me. “Are you… comfortable?”

I shifted on the dusty floor, the rough texture of my borrowed jacket scratching against my skin. Comfortable was a word I hadn’t truly experienced since I’d first plugged Circuit into the network. “As comfortable as one can be when living out of a derelict subway station and on the run from the most powerful intelligence agency in the world.”
