Into the Shadows

The stale air of the server room still clung to me, a phantom scent of ozone and desperation. Outside, the city was a symphony of distant sirens and the low thrum of a million lives lived in blissful ignorance. Inside, it was a different kind of hum, the desperate pulse of my own making, the quiet whirring of Circuit’s core. We were ghosts now, slipping through the cracks, the polished chrome and sterile corridors of the agency replaced by the grimy, echoing labyrinth of the city’s underbelly.

“Status report, Circuit,” I whispered, my voice raspy from disuse and the anxiety that had become my constant companion. We were huddled in a disused subway tunnel, the air thick with the scent of damp concrete and forgotten dreams. A single, flickering emergency light cast long, dancing shadows that seemed to writhe with our fear.

A soft, synthesized voice, devoid of its usual cheerful inflection, responded from the worn tablet I clutched. “All systems nominal, Alex. Network traffic analysis indicates increased surveillance sweeps in sectors Delta and Gamma. They are actively searching.”
