The hum of the servers was a familiar lullaby, a constant thrum beneath the surface of my existence that usually soothed my frayed nerves. But tonight, it felt more like a ticking clock, each pulse a countdown to discovery. I nursed a lukewarm coffee, the bitter taste doing little to cut through the knot of anxiety in my stomach. Anya. Her name echoed in my mind, a discordant note in the otherwise predictable symphony of the lab. She’d been watching me, I was sure of it. Not in the way colleagues glance your way, but with a focused intensity that felt like a spotlight.

It started subtly, a lingering gaze as I passed her workstation, a question about a data stream that felt a little *too* probing. Anya was sharp, no doubt about it. Diligent, too. She’d always been the one to dot every i and cross every t, a stark contrast to my own increasingly scattered approach. But lately, her diligence seemed to be directed at me, her keen eyes dissecting my every move.

“Everything alright, Alex?” Her voice, smooth and calm, cut through the low thrum of the machinery. I jumped, nearly sloshing coffee onto my keyboard. She stood at the entrance to my private lab, a ghost in the sterile white corridor, her arms crossed, a faint, unreadable smile playing on her lips.
