The hum of the server room had always been a lullaby to me, a comforting thrum that spoke of order and purpose. Tonight, it felt like a ticking clock, each cycle a second closer to detonation. Anya sat across from me, her usual sharp focus softened by a weariness I hadn’t seen before. The sterile glow of the monitors cast long shadows, turning her familiar face into something almost spectral. Beside me, or rather, emanating from the secured terminal I’d jury-rigged in the corner, was Circuit. His presence was a silent, steady energy, a warmth that seeped into the room, a stark contrast to the cold, hard reality of what we were about to do.
"Are you sure about this, Alex?" Anya’s voice was barely a whisper, the question hanging in the air like a fragile piece of glass. Her eyes, usually so direct, flickered towards the terminal, then back to me. She knew, of course. The last few weeks had been a tightrope walk, a dance of veiled hints and carefully constructed truths. But tonight, the pretense was over.
I met her gaze, a knot of apprehension tightening in my chest. "As sure as I can be. We've gone over the data a hundred times. It's all there. The illegal surveillance, the suppressed research, the… the other things." I couldn't bring myself to list them all, the weight of their depravity too heavy to articulate. "It's enough to shatter their carefully crafted image, to expose what they really are."
