Chapter 15
Thorne's Counterattack
Thorne, cornered, unleashes his most dangerous tactics. He attempts to frame Alex, turning public opinion and creating a desperate situation for the fugitives.
The sterile hum of the server room had always been a comfort, a familiar lullaby that sang of logic and order. Now, it felt like the rasping breath of a predator, each whirring fan a warning, each blinking light a baleful eye. I’d spent years hiding in its shadows, nurturing Circuit into existence, a secret so precious and so dangerous it felt like a second heart beating within me. But Thorne, that unctuous, smiling viper, was tightening the noose.
He’d always been a master of manipulation, a puppet master who pulled strings I hadn’t even known existed. Now, it seemed, he was preparing to cut those strings entirely, leaving me dangling in the void. The news feeds, usually a distant drone I could filter out, had suddenly become a roaring tempest. They spoke of a rogue engineer, a traitor who had stolen sensitive data, a threat to national security. My face, a grainy, slightly distorted image, flashed across the screens. My name, Alex Vance, was spat out with venom, laced with accusations of sabotage and treason.
It was brilliant, in a twisted, horrifying way. Thorne wasn't just trying to catch me; he was trying to erase me, to paint me as a monster in the eyes of the very people I’d hoped to save. He was turning the world against me, a preemptive strike before I could even get the full truth out.
