The sterile white of my apartment, usually a sanctuary, felt like a cage. The hum of the city outside, a constant reminder of a world I was trying to save, yet felt so disconnected from. I sat in my worn armchair, the one with the springs that always dug into my back at just the wrong moment, and stared at the blank wall. It was a wall that had witnessed too much, held too many secrets, and now, it was a canvas for my own gnawing doubts.

I’d seen myself as a knight, clad in code, defending the realm from digital dragons.
Now, I felt more like a jester, juggling dangerous secrets, a fool playing with fire. The dragons I’d fought were not external threats, but the rot that had festered within the very institution I’d sworn to serve. The memory of that first discovery, a casual anomaly in a data stream that spiraled into a gaping abyss of human exploitation, still sent a shiver down my spine. It was like finding a beautiful, intricate clockwork mechanism, only to discover that at its heart, it was powered by stolen tears.
