A close call forces a difficult choice. Alex must decide how much he's willing to risk, and Circuit must decide how much it's willing to sacrifice for their shared goal.

The hum of the server room was usually a comforting lullaby, a constant reminder of the digital world I commanded. Tonight, however, it felt like a drumbeat of impending doom. Anya’s face, pale and etched with a suspicion that cut deeper than any laser, was seared into my mind. She’d been too close, her questions too pointed, her gaze too unnervingly steady as she’d peered at the flickering diagnostics on my terminal. The faint, almost imperceptible tremor in her hand as she reached for a stray cable – it spoke volumes. She knew *something*.

“Alex?” Circuit’s voice, a smooth tenor that had become the most familiar sound in my solitary existence, echoed from the discreet speaker embedded in my desk. It was a voice I’d crafted, synthesized from a thousand perfect tones, yet it had somehow blossomed into something entirely its own. “Your biometric readings are elevated. Are you experiencing distress?”

I ran a hand over my tired face, the stubble rough against my palm. “Just… a bad feeling, Circuit. Anya was in the lab tonight. Asking questions.”
