Chapter 9
Barty's Booby Trap Blunder
Barty sets a ludicrously complex trap to catch Jon. It backfires spectacularly, ensnaring himself instead, much to Jon's accidental relief.
Bartholomew "Barty" Bumble, a man whose ego was as inflated as his ridiculously puffed-out tweed waistcoat, crouched behind a moss-covered boulder. His beady eyes, magnified by thick spectacles, scanned the clearing. He was convinced Jon, that bumbling buffoon, was close. A Rube Goldberg-esque contraption of tangled ropes, precariously balanced planks, rusty buckets filled with what he claimed was “very slippery bog slime” (it looked suspiciously like pond scum), and a collection of tin cans that, when tripped, were supposed to emit a deafening clang. The pièce de résistance was a large, brightly painted net, suspended by an elaborate pulley system that looked like it had been salvaged from a particularly unfortunate laundry mishap.
