The Chase Through the Whispering Woods
Jon and Barty engage in a slapstick chase through a peculiar forest. Falling trees, tangled vines, and mistaken identities lead to comical failures for both.
The Whispering Woods lived up to its name, though not in the way one might expect. It wasn’t the gentle rustle of leaves or the sigh of the wind that gave it its moniker, but a low, continuous murmur, as if the trees themselves were gossiping about the hapless travelers who dared to tread their moss-covered paths. Jon, currently trying to disentangle himself from a particularly aggressive bramble bush that seemed to have a personal vendetta against his trousers, found himself wishing the trees would just shut up and let him concentrate.
“Honestly,” he muttered, yanking his leg free with a sound like a startled goose, “You’d think a forest would have better things to do than try to hogtie innocent adventurers.”
His musings were interrupted by a frantic, huffing sound from behind him. Jon spun around, tripping over a gnarled root and landing unceremoniously on his bottom. There, red-faced and sputtering, was Bartholomew “Barty” Bumble, his tweed jacket askew and his monocle dangling precariously by its ribbon.
