Chapter 12
Barty's Barnacle Blunder
Barty, convinced a barnacle-encrusted rock is the Giggle Gem, tries to pry it loose. It's heavy, slippery, and ultimately inedible.

His conviction was as solid as the damp, salty rock he was currently wrestling with. It was encrusted with a veritable crust of barnacles, each one a tiny, calcified testament to the sea’s relentless embrace. He’d found it nestled in a crevice, half-hidden by a tangle of seaweed that smelled vaguely of forgotten dreams and low tide.

The gem, if it could be called that, was less ‘gem’ and more ‘a particularly unfortunate piece of maritime debris.’ It was a mottled grey, vaguely egg-shaped, and bore the distinct, unpleasant aroma of something that had been submerged for a very, very long time and had probably seen things no rock should ever see.
