The afternoon had draped itself over the house like a damp, grey blanket, muffling the usual boisterous symphony of Ushe and Washe. Sunlight, usually a playful visitor in their home, seemed to have retreated, leaving only a pale, watery imitation. Mummy, their Mummy, the one whose laughter was a cascade of bells and whose hugs were warm nests, was a quiet stillness in the armchair by the window. Her eyes, normally bright pools reflecting the sky, were clouded, like pebbles at the bottom of a deep, still pond.

Ushe watched her, a knot of worry tightening in his chest. He had tried to be brave, to pretend the shadow hadn’t fallen, but Mummy’s quietness was a louder sound than any of his worried thoughts. Washe, ever the gentle observer, sat beside him, his small hand resting on Ushe’s arm, a silent question in his wide, earnest eyes. They had tried the little wooden bird, its carved wings poised as if ready to take flight, but its tinkling melody, once a lullaby that could coax sleep from the most restless of nights, had only brought a soft sigh from Mummy’s lips. The melody, meant to carry dreams, seemed to echo only the quiet ache in her heart.

Then there was the sea-worn stone, smooth and cool to the touch, that Ushe held now, its faint, rhythmic hum a whisper of distant tides. He remembered Mummy telling them how it sang of boundless oceans and endless horizons, of dreams that stretched as far as the eye could see. He pressed it gently into Mummy’s palm, hoping its oceanic lullaby would stir something within her. For a moment, the hum seemed to deepen, a low thrumming that vibrated through her fingers. A single tear, glistening like a tiny pearl, traced a path down her cheek. It wasn’t the bright, happy tear of laughter, but a quiet, mournful one. Ushe’s heart sank. The magic, the precious magic that Mummy had left them, felt like it was slipping through their fingers like fine sand.
