The city, a sprawling beast of concrete and shadow, never truly slept. Its breath was a low hum of traffic, punctuated by the distant wail of sirens and the occasional, chilling shriek that could belong to anything from a lost cat to a soul in its final moments. Tonight, the hum felt louder, more agitated, like a predator sensing prey. I nursed a lukewarm coffee in the dim glow of my office lamp, the stale air thick with the scent of desperation and cheap paper. My eyes, trained to catch the slightest flicker of unease, scanned the rain-slicked street below. It was the quiet moments, the deceptive lulls, that always set my teeth on edge. That’s when the real trouble usually made its entrance.

My phone buzzed, a jarring sound in the otherwise still room. The contact photo was a grainy, anonymous silhouette. “Street Eyes,” as I’d dubbed him, was my unofficial informant, a phantom in the city’s underbelly who traded whispers for crumpled bills. His messages were always cryptic, his tone a perpetual low-grade panic.

*“They’re coming, Stamp. Big boys. Not cops. Not us. For the boy. And for you.”*
