The city was a coiled snake, its scales shimmering under the oppressive humidity. Every street, every alley, every darkened doorway felt like an eye watching, waiting. The air, thick with the scent of exhaust fumes and something vaguely metallic, hummed with an almost palpable tension. It had been two days since the tracker’s car, a nondescript sedan that had been my shadow for what felt like an eternity, had been found. Two days of the city holding its breath, and two days of me holding mine.

Agent Miller, bless her by-the-book heart, had orchestrated a city-wide dragnet. Not for me, not directly, but for anyone who’d had even a passing acquaintance with the ghost I was trying to keep alive. Every vehicle parked within a five-block radius of my apartment building was being meticulously searched. Every tenant, every visitor, every stray cat that had dared to nap on a windowsill was being questioned. And then there were the apartments. A grid search, they called it. A thorough, systematic dismantling of privacy, all in the name of justice.

From my vantage point, a carefully chosen corner booth in a diner that smelled perpetually of stale coffee and regret, I watched the uniformed officers swarm. Their movements were precise, almost choreographed, a stark contrast to the chaos that was brewing beneath the surface. They were looking for a body, and they were going to find one. The tracker, bless his foolish, loyal soul, had been carrying his burden with him, tucked away in the trunk like a grisly souvenir.
