Two days. That’s how long it had been since Agent Miller had graced my newly acquired, entirely legal existence with her presence, her lukewarm coffee, and her unsettlingly sharp gaze. Two days since she’d sat in my cramped, albeit tidy, new office, the scent of fresh paint and impending doom clinging to the air like cheap cologne. Two days of me trying to convince myself that this was it. This was the clean slate. No more lurking in shadows, no more wrestling with the ghosts of my past cases. Just… Jacob Woodville, the reformed lawyer, the man who’d traded in his trench coat for a tailored suit and his .38 Special for a stack of legal briefs.

But the civilian thoughts, the ones that whispered about fresh starts and second chances, they were starting to get drowned out. Drowned out by the lawyer in me. The lawyer who saw the cracks in the façade, the loose threads in the carefully woven tapestry of my new life. The lawyer who knew that even the most meticulously constructed alibi was just a house of cards waiting for the right gust of wind. The way she’d stirred her coffee, the way her eyes had scanned my office, not with the casual curiosity of a visitor, but with the practiced, unnerving precision of someone cataloging evidence. She’d asked about my transition, about the challenges of starting over, and while her words were laced with a feigned sympathy, her tone was all professional inquiry. It was the kind of inquiry that makes a man who’s spent half his life playing cat and mouse with the law feel like the mouse, even when he’s playing the role of the cat.
