Chapter 12
Unknown wonders
Mr. Stamp finds himself caught between the mafia's deadly pursuit and the FBI's protection Mr stamp doesn't know how to feel
The sterile white of the witness protection safe house was starting to feel like a second skin. Not the good kind, like a comfortable old sweater, but the suffocating kind, like a straitjacket. I traced the faint condensation ring on the polished laminate table, the ghost of a forgotten coffee cup. Outside, the world was a blur of anonymous foliage, a carefully curated landscape designed to keep me isolated. Isolated, and safe. Safe from Don Corleone’s legions, safe from the long arm of the law, or at least, the part of it that wanted to slap handcuffs on me for facilitating Jacob Woodville’s escape from justice.

Stuck in this gilded cage, with the FBI – specifically Agent Miller – breathing down my neck, though she didn’t know it. Not yet. She thought she’d saved a killer, a pawn in a larger game. She didn’t know I was the architect of his relocation, the puppet master pulling strings that led to this quiet, unnerving existence.

My clients were now the elderly woman trying to keep her cat from being evicted, the young man wrongly accused of shoplifting. Noble causes, sure. But my mind kept drifting back to the screams, the chillingly calm confession of Jacob Woodville, the sheer, unadulterated horror of what he’d done. And the gnawing question: was he truly remorseful, or just terrified of Don Corleone’s wrath?
