Chapter 4
Finding Her Calm Corner
Bailey realizes her new secret spot is her sanctuary. When anxiety bubbles up, she knows she can retreat there to feel calm and secure. With her quiet corner, Bailey slowly begins to feel braver, ready to join her family more often.
The world outside Bailey’s furry head could be a very loud, very busy place. Even when she was tucked safely inside her cozy dog bed, surrounded by the familiar, comforting scent of her family, a sudden clatter from the kitchen could send a tremor through her paws. A door slamming, a bicycle whizzing past the window, even Lily’s gleeful squeals during a particularly exciting game of chase – these were all things that made Bailey’s ears flatten and her tail tuck itself between her legs. She loved her family, truly, with every wag of her tail and every soft sigh she let out when they all gathered around her, their hands gentle and their voices low. They were her whole world, her safe haven. But sometimes, the world outside that safe haven felt just a *little* too much.
Lately, though, a new feeling had begun to bloom within Bailey, a tiny seed of hope that had started to sprout thanks to those hushed conversations she’d overheard. Mom and Dad had been talking, their voices soft like rustling leaves, about a “quiet spot.” Bailey hadn’t quite understood all the words, but the feeling behind them – a feeling of peace, of calm, of a special place just for her – had resonated deep within her. She’d seen Mom’s kind eyes and Dad’s thoughtful frown as they’d spoken, and she’d noticed Lily’s eager nodding, as if she too understood the magic of this mysterious “quiet spot.”
One sunny afternoon, the familiar flutter of anxiety began to stir in Bailey’s chest. Lily was outside, her laughter like tiny bells, calling Bailey’s name. “Come on, Bailey! Let’s play tag! You’re so fast!” Usually, this would have sent Bailey scurrying under the dining room table, her heart thumping a frantic rhythm against her ribs. But today, a different instinct nudged her. The memory of the whispered words, the promise of a special place, drew her towards the back door. She nudged it open with her nose, her eyes wide with a cautious curiosity.
